IMPORTANT FOR THE SUNDAY, NOV 13 RIDE:

The change in plan switching Sunday’s ride to a fat bike ride in Duxbury was made necessary due to the change in weather forecast for Sunday to keep riders safe. This page doesn’t describe the ride, but if you RSVP by 9am Sunday morning, November 13, you will receive complete information as to the route, location of where to park and all of the other important things to know. The route for Sunday is 20 miles, 1/2 of the ride is on beach, the other 1/2 is on trails and there are about 5 miles of paved roads.

Most of the information on this page pertains to the mixed terrain ride for Saturday. Please fill out the Ride Waiver and get your fat bike ready for a great day of riding tomorrow, Sunday, November 13.

Details

This mixed-terrain ride takes cyclists to many interesting trails with roads connecting them.

This is a ride for your gravel, mountain, or fat bike. Gravel bikes are best suited for the route, however, we’ll have people out there on all of these bikes and our Super Domestique leading the last group to roll out is riding a loaded Fat Bike.

The format of this ride allows you to have a longer ride one or both days, depending on your schedule and riding interest. The route is reversed (so the same but opposite) from Saturday to Sunday, making it simple to run the ride and offer you more options!

The ride departs at 9 am both days. We have a designated RHQ Super Domestique leading the slowest/last group. Faster riders will be grouped together prior to rollout so people have others to ride with and if you find yourself with a group too fast, just wait on the route and the next-fastest group will pick you up.

The last group’s Super Domestique is riding a fat bike with a bit of a load, thus this group will not be moving that quickly - likely averaging ~9-10mph. If you’re not that confident in your speed on your gravel bike, this might be the ideal group for you!

Distance

The route is ~40 miles in length and on the less-challenging dirt end of the spectrum.

Post-Ride Social Time

The ride begins/ends in a parking lot. We’ll be serving hot cocoa to anyone who sticks around until the end or anyone who is riding with the last group being led by our Super Domestique!

Parking

Parking is available at the Feely Field. Details will be emailed to all who RSVP by 5pm the day prior to the ride you’ve RSVP’d for.

Route

The route will be emailed to all who RSVP by 5pm the evening before the ride.

Estimated Ride Time

~3-4.5 hours depending on riding pace.

Route Notes

We discuss these with you prior to rollout. Note that a mixed terrain ride is rougher than a “gravel” ride. You’ll be riding over some roots and rocks.

Last-Minute Information

We will email all participants with any critical late-breaking news.

Riding Rules, What to Bring, How Our Rides are Different

All riders are required to read and are expected to abide by These Rules.

Waiver

Ride Headquarters requires a signed waiver before your first ride. Please fill it out online prior to your first ride.

Proper bike & Equipment

  • A bike with 35mm tires or bigger. Wider tires almost always nicer. This is a gravel ride that is also appropriate for fat and mountain bikes. If you are a slower rider, bring out your gravel bike. If you’re faster, any bike will suffice. Want to shake down your fat bike? Come ride with the last group but be sure you’re up for a ~9-10mph minimum rolling average on whatever bike you come out with.

  • Clipless pedals and shoes.  These are important elements of bike control. If you are an experienced cyclist who has used platform pedals and sticky shoes extensively, this is acceptable. Note that mountain-style pedals/cleats are significantly better than road-style. We strongly discourage road pedals/cleats on a mixed terrain ride. You can possibly get away with road pedals/cleats on a gravel (dirt road) ride, but not a mixed terrain ride.

  • A bike that’s in safe working order that is properly lubed and tuned. We’ll ask you to call for a ride or take an Uber home if you have a mechanical situation that will hinder the forward progress of the group by more than a few minutes.

  • Be sure you have supplies necessary for all common mechanicals including extra derailleur hangers, a multi-tool, tubes, CO2 or hand pump, etc. You are responsible for you and your bike.
